World Microbiome Day 2026 at Yakult Europe: Advancing Microbiome Science Together
In celebration of World Microbiome Day (27th of June), Yakult Europe hosted a two-day scientific programme in Almere and Amsterdam, bringing together leading experts to explore key developments in microbiome research.
Colleagues from across the OpCo’s were present, together with their invited guests, contributing to a diverse and international exchange of perspectives.

Day 1: Bringing experts together around gut diversity
The first day, held at Yakult Europe’s headquarters in Almere, focused on gut diversity, healthy ageing, and future perspectives in microbiome science. Leading experts shared their insights through a series of scientific lectures and discussions, fostering an open exchange of knowledge across disciplines. Prof. Bruno Pot addressed the role of fermented foods and probiotics, Prof. Marie‑Christine Simon explored nutrition as a driver of gut health, and Prof. Silvia Turroni discussed the gut microbiota in relation to healthy ageing. The programme concluded with a panel discussion moderated by Prof. Jens Walter, encouraging dialogue on current challenges and emerging directions in the field.
Participants also joined a factory tour at the Yakult Europe site, providing valuable insight into how scientific knowledge and technical expertise are translated into practical applications that support everyday health.
Day 2: From science to the living world
The second day of the programme continued in Amsterdam and offered a complementary perspective. A visit to Micropia, the world’s only museum dedicated to microbes, highlighted the invisible microbial world that surrounds us and plays an essential role in human life.
Across both days, a central theme emerged:
👉 the importance of diversity, both in the environment and within the human gut microbiome.
A forest walk was planned to focus on the link between biodiversity in nature and diversity in the human gut; however, this part of the programme could not take place due to warm weather conditions.
Connecting science, practice and everyday life
Together, these two days reflected Yakult Europe’s commitment to advancing microbiome science and fostering collaboration between researchers, healthcare professionals, and industry experts.
At Yakult Europe, we believe that understanding the microbiome goes beyond the laboratory. It is about recognising diversity, balance, and interconnected systems — both within the human body and in the world around us.
